Our Featured Client for the Month is – HardElek

HardElek, formerly known as Grahamstown Electrical, was opened in 1992 in a tiny 80sqm building by Madeleine and Dononvan Webber. Donovan was an electrical contractor by trade at the time and he had identified a gap in the market. Their sole purpose was to supply the electrical contracting industry with electrical essentials. After much good growth and strong demand, Grahamstown Electrical, or GED as it was known in the industry, moved to a 300sqm building in Hill Street. It was at this point that they expanded into lighting, appliances and general retail based electrical products. The emphasis was, and continues to be, service and expertise. Customers don’t simply walk in and pick items and walk out again. Relationships are developed and solutions are given to ensure that customers gets exactly what they need.  This continues to be a cornerstone of our continued success.

Over this period, Donovan had also been in the building industry and was continuously in search of a good quality paint for his building projects. Around 2002 the company became stockists of Prominent Paints! Over the next 18 years they sold paint and electrical goods but concentrated mainly on electrical due to space constraints.

Things changed in 2021, with demand for the Prominent Paints products growing strongly and bigger premises becoming essential. We now added another 250sqm of store front, this time, purely dedicated to paints. At the same time, we rebranded to HardElek for a fresh new look and to support multi-branching.

A few years before this, PPG took over Prominent Paints and Sigma Coatings was introduced, which added more clout and more product lines. As a Management Team we continued to build relationships with our customers and provide solutions rather than just products. Consistency is key!

In line with our trading philosophy our staff are well trained to be paint specialists. We also regularly offer free product training to our customers and host training events on an ongoing basis. We strive to ensure that that our customers are fully equipped and knowledgeable on all of our products.

This year, 2022, we expanded again, opening a paint depot in Kenton on Sea in order to service our contractors in the coastal areas with the same style and energy we have always provided in Grahamstown.
